![]() ECC, or Extended Congregate Care, is a special type of ALF license that allows an assisted living facility to provide a higher level of care than is ordinarily allowed under a standard ALF license. By being able to extend the continuum of care, we are able to support the concept of "aging in place." Residents who go beyond what assisted living can do and who would otherwise have to go to a nursing home may be eligible to stay and go into ECC. Aging in place means that a resident will have the security of knowing that, as they grow older and their functional abilities may decline, they will be able to remain in the same place, rather than relocating to another facility. Assisted living facilities with a standard license only are very limited as to the scope of services they can provide; therefore, when a resident exceeds the criteria for residency, even for a short period of time, they are forced to move out, often to a nursing home or some other skilled facility, disrupting the stability of their new "home," and putting them and their loved ones through the trauma of another move. As an ECC facility, we are expected to actively promote the choice of all residents. Whenever possible, residents should be allowed to make decisions based on their preferences and individual lifestyles. The freedom to choose and act on those choices increases the autonomy of residents and their feelings of control over their own lives.
